about

Originally these were meant to be demos of a full-band recording. Sketches, most of them recorded as first takes, the instrumentals as improvisations. Lately I've been listening to Holly Herndon's excellent new album, PROTO, which is a bizarre and lovely studio creation complete with A.I. vocals, massive multitracking, and next-level shape note choir work. While recording this set of demos, I had the realization that as much as I love what people like Herdon are doing, the freaky studio marvels and lush weirdo orchestration, the reason I came to music in the first place was for the unpolished, intimate, imperfect/perfect artifacts you get in early American folk music. The "nonmusician" musicians (who are of course artists as much as anyone), the field recordings, the swamp blues, desert country, mountain music, old Cajun dance jams; work that is low on technology but high on the visionary output of the single entity, the individual, the person alone in a room with nothing but voice and instrument. These tracks were recorded as single takes over the course of a few afternoons in the front room of the farmhouse where I live; no band, no overdubs, no pedals, no amplification. I had a jug of the farm's homemade hibiscus-dandelion wine and I played all the instruments. No matter what the critic may judge, it felt right. I'm all for feeling right. It's a healthy way to roll.
